| Obverse description | Duke Ottokar I depicted in profile as a mounted knight, riding to the right and bearing a standard or pennant, enclosed within a beaded or rope-like inner circle. The equestrian figure is rendered in the crude but expressive Romanesque style typical of Bohemian bracteate-influenced deniers of the late 12th century. The horse is shown in full stride, with the duke's garments and flag indicated by stylized linear engraving. The flat, irregular flan is characteristic of contemporary hammered coinage. Ottokar I's first reign lasted barely a year. He was installed as Duke of Bohemia in 1192 through Hohenstaufen backing, then deposed in 1193 when Henry VI switched political support to his rival Jindřich Břetislav. Coinage attributable specifically to this window is exceptionally rare precisely because the opportunity to mint was so short.
Cach 657 remains the standard Czech numismatic reference for Přemyslid deniers, and attribution of pieces to this specific reign relies heavily on die analysis rather than documentary evidence.
