| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a large cross pattée with deeply cut, splayed arms, characteristic of Ottonian hammered coinage. At the centre of the cross a small annulet or pellet is visible, and the four quadrants formed by the arms contain pellets or small wedge-shaped ornaments. The legend OTTO is distributed in the quarters around the cross. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the rim, consistent with hand-cut silver blanks of the late 10th century. |
