| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a bold monogram of OTTO rendered in interlaced capital letters within a beaded inner circle, characteristic of the Ottonian imperial denier type struck at Pavia. The monogram is composed of the letters O, T, and O arranged in a cruciform configuration. A circular legend surrounds the inner beaded border, reading H TERCIVS CE OTTO, identifying the issuer as Otto III, Caesar. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of hammered medieval coinage, with legends partially weak at the periphery. The overall style reflects the Carolingian-derived epigraphic tradition maintained at the Pavian mint during the late tenth and early eleventh centuries. |
