This denier belongs to a joint issue struck in the names of Otto I and Otto II, reflecting the co-regency arrangement formalized when Otto I had his son crowned co-emperor in 967 — a deliberate dynastic maneuver to secure Ottonian succession before the elder emperor's death in 973. The Milan mint, reactivated under imperial control following Otto I's Italian campaigns, was one of the primary facilities producing these issues for circulation in the northern Italian territories the Ottonians were actively trying to hold against local aristocratic resistance.
