Aversbeschreibung Crude diademed bust of King Olof Skötkonung facing right, rendered in the Anglo-Saxon tradition, set within a beaded inner circle. The bust is draped, depicted in a stylized manner characteristic of early medieval hammered coinage, with pellet ornaments visible around the effigy. A border of alternating pellets and small rosettes or stars surrounds the inner circle. The circumferential legend in uncial Latin letters reads + OLAFA REX ANCOL, identifying the king as ruler.

Reversbeschreibung Central voided long cross with two vertical lines extending to the inner circle, dividing the field into four quarters, each containing small pellets or annulets in the Anglo-Saxon style. The cross terminates at the beaded inner circle. The surrounding field bears a circumferential legend in uncial Latin letters naming the moneyer and mint, with the cross motif interrupted by the letters C - R - V - X, an invocation of the cross. The outer border is composed of a toothed or denticulated rim consistent with hammered Viking-Age coinage.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Sweden's first native coinage, struck under Olof Skötkonung at Sigtuna, was the direct result of Anglo-Saxon influence rather than continental — English moneyers, among them Leofman, were imported to establish the mint and ran production almost entirely on English models. The imitation was deliberate policy, not incompetence; Olof had been baptized around 1008 and was consciously aligning his kingdom with Christian Europe.

Leofman is one of the few named moneyers whose work survives identifiably from this period. His name, rendered in various spellings across dies, marks him as one of the craftsmen who effectively taught Scandinavia to mint.
