Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, a plain Latin cross occupies the central field, its elongated lower arm lending it a characteristic Carolingian form. The legend, invoking Odo king by the grace of God, runs around the periphery in retrograde or irregular Carolingian capitals and is punctuated by crosslets and I-shaped ornaments flanking the inscription. The entire design is enclosed by a beaded outer border typical of Carolingian denier coinage. The die-work is bold if somewhat irregular, consistent with provincial hammered production of the late ninth century.
