Reverse description The reverse displays a monogram composed of the letters P, T, R, and E, forming an interlaced or conjoined design denoting PTRE, an abbreviation for Treveris (Trier), the mint city. A plain horizontal bar surmounts the monogram, a convention common in Merovingian and early Carolingian denier coinage to denote ecclesiastical authority. The letterforms are bold and angular, skillfully interlocked within the limited flan space. A small cross or pellet ornament appears at the base of the monogram in the lower field. The overall design reflects the transitional epigraphic style of the archbishopric's earliest coinage issues.
