Additional information

Matthias II's Hungarian deniers of this period were struck under persistent pressure from the Ottoman frontier and an increasingly restive Protestant nobility — the same political tensions that would erupt into the Thirty Years' War just months after this issue's final year. His Hungarian coronation in 1608 had been extracted under duress, with the Diet forcing him to confirm noble and Protestant privileges before they would recognize him at all.

The billon content here reflects decades of incremental debasement stretching back through Rudolf II's reign, when military expenditure chronically outpaced revenue from the silver mines at Kremnitz.
