| Description du revers | A stylised town or fortress motif occupying the centre of the field, depicting an enclosing wall flanked by two towers, surmounted by a lattice or crosshatched arch, representing the city of Lüneburg. The architectural elements are rendered in highly schematic, almost geometric fashion consistent with German hammered coinage of the late 11th to early 12th century. A partial legend reading LIVN[...] surrounds the design, abbreviating LVNEBVRG or a variant thereof, identifying the mint city. The crude but expressive engraving reflects the workshop conventions of the Saxon duchy under Magnus Billung. |

Magnus Billung, Duke of Saxony from 1073 until his death in 1106, was the last of the Billung dynasty — a line that had governed Saxony for over a century under Ottonian and Salian emperors. His reign coincided with the Investiture Controversy, and Saxon nobles, including Magnus himself, were deeply entangled in the rebellions against Henry IV. This denier was struck during that turbulent period of intermittent warfare and shifting ducal authority across the northern Saxon lands.
