Barcelona struck copper deniers in the name of Louis XIII of France following Catalonia's 1640 revolt against Philip IV of Spain — the so-called Corpus de Sang — which drove the Generalitat to place the principality under French protection. Louis XIII died in May 1643, making this issue a brief transitional curiosity: coins bearing his portrait were still being produced in Barcelona under his successor's authority before the dies were updated to Louis XIV.
