Obverse description The field is divided into two lines by a central horizontal bar, displaying the royal title in two registers, beginning at approximately 11 o'clock. The abbreviated legend LVDOVICVS RE FRA OϽN, identifying Louis VII as King of the Franks, is distributed around the field in Romanesque majuscule lettering. The design is characteristic of the Capetian feudal denier tradition, with the inscription serving as the primary decorative element in lieu of a portrait. A cross pattee initiates the circular legend.
