Louis of Flanders became Count of Nevers through his mother Yolande, and his tenure coincided with the catastrophic fallout from the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302, where Flemish forces humiliated the French crown. His dual position — Count of Nevers as a French vassal, yet heir to a Flanders that had just routed French knights — made his political standing uniquely precarious throughout this coinage period.
The denier references in Poey d'Avant and Dieudonné place this squarely within the feudal monetary tradition of Nevers, a county whose independent minting rights survived repeated Capetian pressure to consolidate regional coinage.
