| Obverse description | A plain cross with slightly flared terminals occupies the central field, enclosed within a raised beaded inner circle. The circumferential legend reads clockwise in Carolingian majuscule characters, separated from the beaded circle by a narrow flat band. The flan is characteristically irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, typical of Carolingian hammered coinage. The relief is bold and well-centered, with the cross arms of even proportion. |
