Obverse description Central field bears the Carolingian royal monogram REX, composed of interlaced letters in the characteristic Carolingian style, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in bold relief typical of hammered Carolingian deniers, with the letters forming an ornate ligature. A circular legend in Latin runs between the beaded inner circle and the irregular outer rim of the flan.
