Obverse description Central field features a plain cross pattée enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The circular Latin legend +LODOICVS, reading the name of King Louis IV, surrounds the inner circle in the outer field, interrupted by a cross pommée at the beginning of the inscription. The coin is struck on an irregularly shaped flan typical of Carolingian hammered silver coinage, with a beaded border at the rim.
