Obverse description Central field bears a Carolingian monogram of HLVDOVVICVS (Ludovicus), the interlaced letters forming the royal cipher characteristic of ninth-century Frankish coinage, executed in high relief in a bold, somewhat crude hammered style. The monogram is enclosed within a plain inner circle, beyond which the circular Latin legend reads ✠ HLVDOVVICVS REX, identifying the issuer as Louis, King. The coin's irregular flan and slightly uneven strike are consistent with hand-hammered workshop production of the Carolingian period.
