| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a plain cross pattée within a beaded inner circle, dividing the field into four equal quarters. The cross is bold and slightly raised, characteristic of early Carolingian hammered coinage. Surrounding the inner circle, the imperial legend is distributed in two arcs reading clockwise. The lettering is in large, slightly irregular Roman capitals typical of ninth-century mint workmanship. The coin exhibits the characteristic uneven flan of hammered silver deniers of this period. |
