Denier - Louis I Toulouse mint, crosses

Louis I — "the Pious" — inherited an empire his father had spent decades assembling by force, and spent much of his reign trying to hold it together through ecclesiastical reform rather than conquest. The Toulouse mint operated under comital authority in a region still absorbing the administrative reorganization Louis imposed after 814, when he replaced nearly all of Charlemagne's counts within the first year of his reign. The crosses type belongs to the transitional phase before the 864 Edict of Pîtres centralized Carolingian minting more aggressively — a period when regional mint output varied considerably in both volume and die quality.
