The mint name legend is arranged around the central device, introduced by a cross pattée at the start of the inscription. |

Struck during the opening years of Louis the Pious's reign, this Toulouse denier belongs to the transitional monetary moment immediately following Charlemagne's death in January 814. Louis inherited an empire but also an incomplete monetary reform — his father's coin ordinances required continuation and enforcement across mints that had varying degrees of compliance. Toulouse, as a major administrative and commercial node in the Carolingian south, was among the more productive regional mints of this period.
The Prou Car#803 reference places this squarely within the pre-reform coinage before the stricter uniformity measures tightened output across imperial mints around 818.
