Reverse description A schematic representation of a city gate occupies the central field, depicted in a frontal, architecturally stylized manner with two flanking towers or pilasters, a central arched or rectangular doorway, and a crenellated or rounded roofline surmounted by globular finials. A cross or rosette ornament appears below the gate structure at the base of the design. The mint name STRAZBURC is inscribed in the surrounding circular legend, identifying this issue as a product of the Strasbourg mint, one of the important Carolingian minting centers in Alsace. The design closely follows the Carolingian temple or gateway type employed at various mints under Louis I.
