| Obverse description | Diademed and draped bust of Louis I (the Pious) facing right, rendered in a schematic late-antique style typical of early Carolingian coinage. The emperor is depicted wearing a diadem with flowing ribbons and a paludamentum fastened at the shoulder. The portrait occupies the central field with the circumferential Latin legend HLVDDOVICVS IMP AVG arranged around the periphery. The engraving reflects the revival of imperial Roman iconographic conventions under the Carolingian renaissance. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, as characteristic of hammered silver issues of the period. |
