The cross divides the inner field into four quadrants, each plain. Surrounding the inner circle is a radiate or beaded border separating it from the outer legend zone. The circular Latin legend reads ✠ HLVDOVVICVS IMP, identifying the issuer as Louis the Pious, Emperor, with the text arranged around the full circumference in bold, widely spaced capital letters typical of early ninth-century Carolingian coinage. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven in thickness, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period. |
