The surrounding field carries the Latin mint legend METΛLLVM, referring to the Melle mint in the Poitou region, a centre of silver production renowned for its argentiferous lead mines. The letters are struck in the Carolingian epigraphic style, arranged around the circumference of the coin and preceded by a cross. The flan edges are irregular and the overall strike shows the typical characteristics of ninth-century hammered coinage. |
