| Obverse description | Central cross pattée surrounded by an inner beaded circle, with the emperor's name legend HLVDOVVICVS IMP distributed around the circumference in large, somewhat irregular Roman capitals characteristic of early Carolingian hammered coinage. The field between the cross arms and the inner circle is plain, while the area between the inner beaded circle and the outer legend zone is unadorned. The overall design follows the standard Carolingian temple or cross-type denier format established under Louis the Pious, with the cross serving as the dominant central motif. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, typical of hand-struck silver coinage of the period. |
