Obverse description Central field divided by a plain cross into four quarters, each bearing a letter of the royal name in bold Carolingian characters, reading hLU / DUh, a monogram for HLUDOVICUS (Louis). The inscription is arranged within the quadrants formed by the cross, with individual pellets placed between the letters. The whole is enclosed within a beaded border typical of Carolingian silver coinage, struck on an irregular flan characteristic of the hammered technique of the period.
