The imperial legend HLVDOVVICVS IMP runs around the periphery in Latin characters, separated by a cross at the beginning. The flat, broad flan is characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage, with the cross serving as the central device in the tradition established under Charlemagne. The lettering is rendered in a bold, somewhat angular hand typical of early ninth-century Frankish moneyers. |
