Obverse description A plain cross occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding annular field bears the imperial legend in bold Carolingian capital letters, initiated by a cross pattée. The lettering is boldly struck in the characteristic Carolingian style, with individual letters evenly spaced around the circumference. The overall design is typical of the Carolingian reformed coinage type introduced under Louis the Pious.
