Louis I came to the Hungarian throne in 1342 and almost immediately began asserting Angevin ambitions across the region, launching two costly campaigns into Naples to avenge the murder of his brother Andrew in 1345. The denier series covering 1346–1357 spans precisely this period of military overextension, when the royal treasury was under sustained pressure from both campaign financing and the demographic shock of the Black Death reaching Hungary around 1349.
