| Reverse description | Central field presents a facing bust of a ruler, likely Duke Louis I of Bavaria, depicted in a schematic Romanesque style with a crown surmounting the head and long flowing hair or drapery falling to either side of the shoulders. The facial features are rendered in a stylized, archaic manner with large eyes and linear detailing typical of 13th-century Bavarian deniers. A partial Latin legend, largely illegible due to the irregular flan and wear, runs along the upper margin of the coin. The field is slightly concave as a result of the hammered manufacture, and the coin's edge is uneven with natural flan irregularities. |

Louis I of Bavaria — "der Kelheimer" — ruled from 1183 until his murder in 1231, stabbed on a bridge over the Altmühl River at Kelheim in an assassination that was never conclusively attributed. His killers were almost certainly acting on political orders, with Duke Frederick II of Austria among the suspected instigators, though nothing was proven. Deniers of this period reflect the fragmented monetary authority of the German duchies, where regional lords struck silver on their own terms long after imperial coinage had ceased to impose uniformity.
