Obverse description Central field features a stylized floral or foliate motif with curving stems and pellets, enclosed within an inner beaded circle (grenetis). The surrounding annular legend reads LOTHARIVS REX in retrograde or irregular Latin capitals, itself bordered by an outer beaded circle. The overall design exhibits the crude, hand-engraved character typical of Carolingian hammered coinage, with star and wedge ornaments interspersed among the letters in the outer field.
