Reverse description A plain cross with a pellet in each of the four quarters, all contained within a beaded inner circle, typical of the Carolingian denier type struck at the Troyes mint. The cross arms extend to the inner beaded border, dividing the central field into four equal quadrants each ornamented with a single pellet. The outer legend, separated from the inner circle by a plain field, reads in debased Latin capitals and references the divine grace formula. The flan is irregularly shaped and slightly uneven in relief, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period.
