The cross arms are bold and well-defined, rendered in the flat relief characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage. The surrounding legend CAINONI CASTRO, introduced by a cross pattee, identifies the Chinon mint, and runs around the outer margin of the coin. |

Lothair II came to the West Frankish throne at age thirteen following the sudden death of Louis IV, ruling under the effective regency of Hugh the Great before consolidating his own authority. The Chinon mint was among the royal mints actively producing under his name, though output from this period was irregular and heavily influenced by the practical control of local magnates rather than genuine royal administration. Chinon itself sat within Touraine, a region whose political loyalties shifted repeatedly across Lothair's thirty-two year reign.
