Lothair II ruled West Francia during one of the Carolingian dynasty's most contested final chapters, spending much of his reign maneuvering against the rising Robertian faction that would ultimately displace his line entirely. The Bourges mint was among the more productive royal workshops of the late Carolingian period, operating under the theoretical authority of the crown even as regional magnates steadily absorbed effective control of minting across the realm.
The monogram type references the Carolingian royal cipher inherited from earlier rulers — by Lothair's reign, more a claim of continuity than an active administrative statement. Hugh Capet deposed Lothair's successor Louis V in 987, ending the dynasty one year after this issue's terminus.
