| Obverse description | A plain cross with equal arms occupies the center of the coin, enclosed within a raised inner circle or ring. Radiating lines emanate outward from this inner circle toward the coin's periphery, imparting a solar or wheel-like appearance to the field. The circular Latin legend surrounding the central motif reads HLOTHARIVS IMP AV, identifying the issuer as Emperor Lothair Augustus. The lettering is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian hammered style, with letters of varying regularity distributed around the circumference. The overall design follows the standard Carolingian imperial denier type established under Louis the Pious. |
