Obverse description A plain cross with a pellet in each of the four quarters, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding field carries the Carolingian imperial legend in debased Carolingian minuscule letterforms, reading HLOTARIVS IMPERATOR in retrograde or irregular fashion. The flan is irregularly shaped, characteristic of hand-struck Carolingian coinage, and the die work reflects the provincial output of the Dorestad mint under Lothair I.
