The abbreviated Latin legend reads LEO NI PAP in the upper lines and OTTO in the lower line, jointly invoking the authority of Pope Leo VIII and Emperor Otto I. The lettering is rendered in bold, somewhat crude hammered relief consistent with tenth-century Roman workshop practice. No figural imagery appears on this face; the entire design is epigraphic in character. The flan is irregular and slightly scalloped at the rim, as is typical of hand-struck issues of this period. |
