Leo VII's pontificate (936–939) fell entirely under the political grip of Alberic II, who had seized control of Rome in 932 and styled himself "Prince of the Romans." The co-inscription of Alberic on a papal coinage is a direct expression of that dominance — he controlled the mint as surely as he controlled the Lateran. Leo, chosen pope by Alberic's own hand, had little independent authority. The arrangement was unusual enough that numismatists treat this type as a joint issue rather than a conventional papal series, and the Berman reference reflects precisely that ambiguity in its classification.
