Obverse description Central field features the monogram LEOP arranged within a square frame, the letters disposed in two rows with L and E above, O and P below, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A circular legend surrounds the central motif, reading LEO P followed by a cross and SCS PETRVS, invoking Pope Leo and Saint Peter. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, consistent with mid-tenth century hammered coinage of the Papal mint at Rome. The die work is characteristically bold though somewhat coarse, typical of early medieval Italian ecclesiastical issues.
