Ladislaus II ruled for barely eighteen months, installed as a rival claimant against Stephen III in a dynastic struggle backed by Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Komnenos. His short reign and the primitive minting capacity of twelfth-century Hungary kept production volumes extremely low. Coins attributed to his tenure are among the most difficult to firmly authenticate in the Árpád-era series, with attribution often resting on die-linkage studies rather than any distinguishing royal inscription.
