| Beschrijving keerzijde | The enthroned or standing crowned Madonna is depicted frontally, cradling the Christ Child in her arms, the composition breaking through two concentric pearled inner circles in a style characteristic of late medieval Hungarian coinage. The mintmaster's initials or mintmark appear in the field on either side of the Madonna figure. The surrounding legend, PATRONA * * VNGARIE, proclaims the Virgin Mary as Patroness of Hungary, a devotional tradition central to Hungarian royal iconography. |

John Zápolya struck this denier as the Ottoman-backed claimant to the Hungarian throne, in direct competition with Habsburg Ferdinand I, who simultaneously issued his own Hungarian coinage following the catastrophe at Mohács in 1526. Hungary effectively had two kings minting in parallel, each asserting legitimacy over the same realm. Zápolya held Transylvania and eastern Hungary under Suleiman's protection; Ferdinand controlled the western strips. Coins from 1528 fall squarely in the opening phase of that rivalry, before the formal partition hardened.
