Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, a three-line Latin inscription occupies the central field, reading the abbreviated names and titles of Pope John and Saint Peter of Rome. A circular legend surrounds the beaded border. The lettering is characteristic of tenth-century Carolingian-derived epigraphy, struck in the crude hammered style typical of early medieval papal coinage. The flan is irregular in shape, with uneven surfaces and slight weakness in areas of the strike.
