Obverse description Frontal bust of Pope John X in pontifical vestments, rendered in the crude but vigorous Carolingian hammered style characteristic of early tenth-century Roman coinage. The figure is depicted facing, with stylized facial features and garments suggested by incised lines radiating from the central effigy. The legend IOH S PETRVS, invoking the authority of Saint Peter, is distributed across the field to either side of the bust. The irregular flan and uneven strike are consistent with hand-hammered production at the Rome Mint during this period.
