| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central field features a large bold Carolingian monogram formed by interlocking capital letters, enclosed within a beaded or plain inner circle. The surrounding annular zone is divided by radiating lines into alternating triangular segments, forming a distinctive starburst or cross-pattée arrangement consistent with Carolingian denier types struck at Rome. The outer legend in Latin reads ROMA with a cross and LVDOVVICVS IP, identifying the mint city of Rome and co-issuer Emperor Louis II with the title Imperator. The engraving is robust and typical of mid-9th-century papal-imperial joint coinage, reflecting the dual authority of Pope and Emperor. The irregular flan edges are characteristic of the hammered production technique of this period. |
