The monogram is flanked by a small annulet above and below, with a cross pattée positioned at the top of the coin. The surrounding outer legend reads IOHANS ✠ KAROLVS IMP, distributed around the periphery in irregular Carolingian majuscule lettering. The overall design follows the Carolingian denier convention of the period, with the die struck on an irregular flan typical of hammered coinage. |
