Obverse description Central Carolingian monogram composed of interlaced letters, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram combines the names of Pope John IX and Emperor Lambert of Spoleto in the characteristic Carolingian diplomatic style. A cross surmounts the monogram at the top. The surrounding legend, reading IOHANS LANTVERT IMP, is arranged between the inner beaded circle and the outer border, rendered in bold Carolingian capital letters. The overall design follows the Carolingian denier tradition established under Charlemagne.
