Obverse description Central field displays the quartered heraldic shield of the Duchy of Brittany, combining the checky pattern of Dreux (alternating squares in two rows) with a quarter of ermine tails, all within a beaded inner circle. The design is boldly struck in high relief typical of early 14th-century hammered feudal coinage. The surrounding legend is rendered in Gothic Latin lettering separated by a cross pattée at the beginning. The flan is irregularly shaped, as is characteristic of hand-struck medieval billon deniers of this period.
