Obverse description Central field occupied by a plain cross pattée enclosed within a single inner circle, with a pellet placed in each of the first and second quarters (upper left and upper right angles). The surrounding legend, in Gothic lettering, reads IOAN : LO CONS (John, Count), separated by a colon stop. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, characteristic of hammered medieval coinage of the Béarn lordship.
