Obverse description Central field displays a heraldic shield bearing the arms of the Bishopric of Toul, flanked on either side by decorative foliate or scroll elements. Above the shield, two small symbols — possibly a star and a crescent or similar charges — are visible in the upper field. The design is contained within a beaded inner border, typical of medieval episcopal coinage of the Lorraine region. The abbreviated legend IOH EPS, identifying Bishop John, appears around the shield. The overall style is characteristic of late 13th-century hammered ecclesiastical deniers.
