Obverse description Central cross pattée occupying the field, enclosed within a plain inner circle formed by a beaded ring. The surrounding legend, rendered in Gothic majuscules, reads IOhANNES DVX, identifying the issuer as John, Duke. An outer toothed border frames the entire design. The hammered fabric gives the flan a characteristically irregular outline.

The upper portion of the shield is surmounted by a crown visible at the top of the die. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle, with the surrounding legend BRITANIE in Gothic majuscules completing the heraldic declaration. An outer toothed border encloses the entire design.
