Additional information

Jogaila issued these deniers in the narrow window between his baptism in February 1386 and his consolidation of joint Polish-Lithuanian rule — a period when establishing a recognizable coinage was as much a political act as a fiscal one. Lithuania had been the last pagan state in Europe, and the sudden appearance of Christian-influenced silver coinage marked an abrupt break from decades of relying on foreign coin and commodity exchange. The series is short-lived by design; Jogaila's attention shifted almost immediately to Kraków.
